Five young entrepreneurs across Leeds and Grenville will be their own boss this summer, thanks to a provincially-funded small business program.

The Leeds Grenville Small Business Center launched its annual Summer Company program on Wednesday afternoon. This is its 22nd year delivering this program, officials said.

The program gives hands-on business training and mentoring to participants, who will receive an award of up to $1,500 in early summer to help with business start-up costs. They will get an additional $1,500 in the fall upon the successful completion of the program and proof of returning to school.

Participants also get education on how to run a small business and the chance to work with local mentors who will provide support and advice, small business center officials added.

This year’s Summer Company participants are the following.

Emily Jollota, Jollota Designs, Brockville: She is using her artistic talents to create resin art this
summer, making everything from jewelry to bookmarks to charcuterie boards. Janevra Pier, Bakery by the Pier, Gananoque: She is making fresh vegan sourdough bagels using locally sourced flour. She will also be creating vegan spreads to accompany the bagels. Pier will be selling her bagels at the markets and events around Gananoque this summer.
